After a long winter, the earth bursts open bringing joy through color. You can discover the beauty of spring at spectacular gardens around the world. Some of the world’s biggest and best spring flower blooms are in travel-worthy spots. Here are our top five recommendations to watch the colors unfold.
Keukenhof, The Netherlands
No list would be complete without mentioning Keukenhof in The Netherlands. It is the world’s largest flower garden that blooms with a rainbow of color in the spring. Open from the last week of March through mid-May, visitors can stroll through acres of colorful tulips and other flowers.
Each spring from the end of March to mid-April, the Tidal Basin region of Washington D.C. erupts with the pink and white flowers of the cherry blossom trees. The more than 3,000 trees, also known as sakura, were a gift from Japan in 1912. You can witness the springtime celebration during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which coordinates daily events, most of which are free and open to the public.
Mount Fuji, Japan
Each spring, shibazakura, or moss phlox, blankets the base of Mount Fuji in Japan. The contrast of electric pink, purple and white flowers against the backdrop of Mount Fuji is breathtaking. To see the roughly 800,000 flowers bloom you will have to travel during the short three-week window in April.
Sonoran Desert, Arizona
After resting all winter and experiencing the spring rain, the cacti of the Sonoran Desert bloom, dotting the sandy landscape with pops of pink, blue and orange. You can see the widest variety of flowers in bloom in April. The cactus show continues as the abundant prickly pears bloom in early May, followed by saguaros from mid-May to mid-June.
Epcot, Disney World
Fun blooms each spring at Walt Disney World® Resort’s Epcot® International Flower and Garden Festival. Visitors can stroll through a collection of their favorite Disney characters brought to life with plants and flowers. The festival runs from end of February to the end of May.
