Chanthu strengthened from a strong tropical storm on Wednesday to a typhoon late Wednesday. Typhoon Chanthu made landfall today in Guangdong province with winds of up to 126 kilometres per hour (78 mph). Chanthu's winds and rain are expected to rake Guangdong, the island province of Hainan and the Guangxi region with "ferocious precipitation", the China Meteorological Administration warned.

Airport officials announced that at least two dozen flights in and out of Hainan's Haikou city were cancelled Thursday.

We are generating reports for travel to this area and will contact travelers directly if any of their flights are affected.
